I'm still not convinced you couldn't do something, for instance, with
the -d option and several & modules renaming themselves to, "local1",
perhaps. I don't have the time to correct your syntax though. You
might try info-cvs since this isn't a bug. I'd probably play around
with the various modules file syntax options for a bit, myself, before
I started asking more questions.

I don't recall. I glance through the FM and didn't see it. We'd love
to see a correction in a patch!
Basically, if a parent directory exists in the repo and a parent
directory exists in the sandbox, then it gets mapped.

Because the majority of users complained to this list that the mapping
_didn't_ happen when it didn't happen. You appear to be one of the
minority that preferred the previous behavior, but I expect you should
really still be able to eke that functionality out of the modules file
if you put a little elbow grease into it.
Such changes probably won't happen on a stable branch (only on feature
branches) in the future, but the stable/feature split didn't happen
until 1.11.6.
