I added a new script at the toplevel (noautomake.sh) which can be run to touch
the files necessary to prevent automake from running after a fresh update. It
forces a rebuild of the Makefiles but that seems like a small price. You can
prevent Autoconf from running as well by running it with '-C'.
This point will hopefully become moot with the upcoming Automake 1.5 release.
