I'm afraid that's correct.

As far as the GNU project goes, the "dd" command may set the record for
backwards-compatibility constraints.  The very name of the "dd" command,
along with the names of some of its operands, comes from OS/360 JCL DD
command, designed designed in the early 1960s.

Hmm, maybe a brief comment to this effect should be in the manual?  If
there's interest, I could draft something.
