I'm not sure how to parse this statement about the X mark - is this
something you are seeing in an Ubuntu gui?  If so, you may be better off
asking your question in an Ubuntu support group - the coreutils list is
not for gui support.

Your original example showed you using sudo to run the copy.  Generally,
/usr/local/share/fonts has restricted permissions (and for a good reason,
because allowing global write access to this directory means anyone could
corrupt fonts).  Perhaps the permission denied error is occurring because
you are copying under the wrong login?  Or put another way, why didn't you
use sudo the second time?
