If your problem is due to the bug Andreas just mentioned,

  http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6127

then coreutils is unlikely to be able to work around the kernel bug.

If you can eliminate the RHEL4 misbehavior by using
coreutils binaries configured and built on that same
system, then please let us know.
