I don't think it's a dispute at this point so much as nobody has stepped 
up to fix the problem. :)  (I think it was a dispute when the gnu 
version was released and was incompatible (late '90s?), but that's water 
under a far distant bridge at this point.) I think that the goal is to 
replace the debian version with the gnu version, it just hasn't happened 
yet.
