I can reproduce the problem even with GNU make (3.80). My guess is that it's something about Solaris 8 perl. It's perl 5.00503. Perhaps coreutils-5.96/tests/misc/sort makes some assumption about Perl that isn't true for that old version? Is there some easy way to debug this at the Perl level?
