stty and/or ksh problem with columns

On the following Linux version:

stnsp013:/home/therter> uname -a
Linux stnsp013 2.4.21-15.ELsmp #1 SMP Thu Apr 22 00:18:24 EDT 2004 i686 i686 
i386 GNU/Linux

stty always reports correct number of columns:

stnsp013:/home/therter> stty -a

but the ksh does not recognize it correctly and "thinks" that only 
80 colums are avaiable and shortens the long command line like this:

stnsp013:/home/therter> 89012345678901234567890123                            <

If COLUMNS will be defined manually to match stty columns, 
everything works fine.
