Thanks for reporting that bug. I think it is fixed in CVS coreutils.
This is fairly bleeding-edge stuff, but you can get the source code as
described in <http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/coreutils>; a quick
summary is to execute the following command:
cvs -d :ext:address@hidden:/cvsroot/coreutils co coreutils
There have been a number of changes to chown, but I just tried the
current version on your test case and it worked for me (whereas
coreutils 5.1.2 chown did not).
