wait4 sounds like a nice program to have, but wouldn't it be more at
home in FAM itself? Or perhaps fileschanged (see below)?

fileschanged <http://fileschanged.sourceforge.net/> is not exactly the
same, but it seems to me that you could write wait4 as a script that
invokes fileschanged, at least as a first approximation.
