As per your initial reply and by looking "#! /bin/sh" in configure file, I
have tried sh -x ./configure and it doesn't report all the stuff that ksh
does.
With ksh (now with sh also) I couldn't reproduce the error. Sorry for the
trouble and thanks for all the help and advice.

In such case we can use the pragma "use warnings" in the beginning of the
perl script .
