Yup, this is correct. From our two remaining IRIX boxes (6.4 and 6.5):
[taz:~] uname -a
IRIX64 taz 6.4 02121744 IP27
[taz:~] which ifconfig
/usr/etc/ifconfig
[altair:~] uname -a
IRIX64 altair 6.5 04131233 IP30
[altair:~] which ifconfig
/usr/etc/ifconfig
Not sure about anything newer (or even if there is anything newer), but
it's been in the same spot since at least ~1997.
