So far, we don't know. The m4-only test case I sent you worked for
you. So I don't know why Bison does not work for you. It should
work.
Autoconf CVS recently changed to require M4 1.4.5 or later, and to
recommend M4 1.4.8. So perhaps 1.4.4 simply isn't acceptable.
Can you reproduce the problem with M4 1.4.8? If not, then the
simplest thing is to upgrade.
