Nelson H. F. Beebe and I tried to get to the bottom of this in
January, and we think it's probably a bug in GCC on the Alpha.  See:

However, we don't know exactly what the bug is.  If you can figure it
out please let us know; otherwise, you might try compiling with a
different compiler, or disabling optimization.
