It is a fairly recent gcc:

        % gcc --version
        gcc (GCC) 3.1 20020420 (prerelease)

        % machinetype
        Apple PowerMac G4 (2 533 MHz CPUs, 256MB RAM);    Darwin 6.2

Thus, it is likely that other systems than Apple Darwin would also run
into the problem that Paul's patch addresses.
