| in a loop. this worked fine till it opened the first 2 files. but when it 
tried to open  the thir file it gave me an segmentation fault.

Try this:

| fp=fopen("filename","r");
| yyrestart (fp);
| ....
| ....
| yyparse();
| fclose(fp)

and please, keep us informed.
