cd is a shell builtin


How about $PROMPT_COMMAND?

I can't reproduce the problem when nothing tries to write $PWD to the
title bar.

Ok sorry. The following reliably hangs up the prompt
on gnome-terminal and xterm:

export PROMPT_COMMAND=
echo -ne "\033]0;:blah\\\007"

You *can* type reset though.
