I tested my one-liner on gawk before mailing the suggestion.
awk '{FS=":"; if ($5 ~ /eric/) {print $5}}' /etc/passwd
works for me. As a matter of fact, so does:
awk --posix '{FS=":"; if ($5 ~ /eric/) {print $5}}' /etc/passwd
