[Bug-AUCTeX] 11.87; shortintertext gives error message when enter math mode ($)

In the following:

\begin{align*}
   a &= b\\
   c &= d\\
\shortintertext{since $e = f$}
  g &= h
\end{align*}

as soon as I enter the dollar sign after "since", auxtex gives the
error message:

"math mode started with align* cannot be closed with dollar"

This does not happen when I use "intertext" instead of "shortintertext",
i.e.

\begin{align*}
  a &= b\\
  c &= d\\
\intertext{since $e = f$}
  g &= h
\end{align*}

does not give me any error messages.

I hope it's not that difficult to make "shortintertext" behave just like
"intertext" does.
