Oh, I wouldn't have thought of this at any point in time. :-)

Hm, it sounds a bit strange that an ubuntu config puts stuff in users'
~/.emacs files. Usually, if a distro emacs package wants to provide
different defaults, it would put them in
/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/site-start.el
or such.
Maybe I can get grip on some machine running ubuntu to check what their
auctex package installs for strange things.
