Thank you for correcting the previously reported bug.
Section 1.2.6 Installation for non-privileged users of the manual describes a
procedure to install as non-root user, however these instructions are flawed,
as has been reported previously on this list before a few years ago.
Slightly related: ./configure --prefix="$HOME" should never ever try to write
anything below /usr. Not recognizing that as a bug is also a failure. (This has
been reported before by someone else and the answer was basically RTFM. ) I
have
no problems with RTFM, but in this case it's a problem of WTFM [1]
To make this bug report complete, via:
./configure--prefix="$HOME" && make && make
install, I obtain among other messages that the install programs wants to
delete /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/preview/preview.sty.
