I just checked with Emacs' built-in version of RefTeX and cannot reproduce the problem. There is probably something else in José's init file causing this.
Note that, as I wrote the 11th September, if I replace my usual init file by one whose contents are just (add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook 'turn-on-reftex) (setq TeX-auto-save t) (setq TeX-parse-self t) (setq-default TeX-master nil) (load "auctex.el" nil t t) (load "preview-latex.el" nil t t) (require 'tex-mik) then I still have the same problem.
