Seriously, if this is a GS problem, the first thing to do is to try older or newer versions.
It is not a Ghostscript problem since the same display math region from the same file can lead to the PNG file in Carbon Emacsen 22.1.50 and X clients GNU Emacs 21.3.50, 22.1.50, 23.0.0, 23.0.50, and 23.0.60. It's only the Cocoa ports of GNU Emacs 23.0.0 and 23.0.60 that fail. Both, Carbon and Cocoa ports, do not support PostScript image types. The Cocoa ports *can* have a different mechanism to create a process environment in which gs runs, but this has to be verified.
PostScript debugging makes it necessary to know exactly what is fed into gs in its own process environment. This information is not delivered. The ktrace programme does not seem to provide this (it's a pity that Mac OS X is neither Solaris nor some Linux). Using the output of Preview I can invoke gs on the command line and it produces the PNG file.
