While playing around with those things I got the impression that AUCTeX
now highlights the backslash of a command in red if the command needs an
argument and the argument is not there (e.g. in \section the backslash
is red). Also open parens are highlighted in warning-face (e.g. in
\section{ the open paren is red).
Am I right? If so, this is a very useful thing. However, it seems as if
the \maketitle macro is also affected sometimes but I can't find a
reproducible test case at the moment.
