This was just to check to see if font locking is the culprit. Without
an example file I cannot say anything about the specific problem, but
the development version of AUCTeX features a lot of improvements in the
font locking code. You can get such a version as a snapshot from
<URL:http://theotp1.physik.uni-ulm.de/~ste/comp/emacs/auctex/snapshots/>
(be sure to set --datarootdir when configuring these snapshots) or via
CVS which is explained at
<URL:http://savannah.gnu.org/cvs/?group=auctex>.
