So what is a ground fall like in a conference?
Depends on the height. That means, what is at stake, what goes wrong
and how compensation of the failure looks like. I don't remember
having experienced or seen something like a ground fall on a
conference yet.
I have. Necessary components: two conference attendees, one professor
(me), one student. One old crappy linux computer and an incompatible
projector.
1) I bring the old crappy linux laptop with a burnt battery to the
conference.
2) On the day of my talk, set the thing up and test it in the room we're
going to use. The room comes with an old projector which does not
want to play ball with my laptop. Pry X into a workable state.
3) 10 minutes before my talk, go wash my hands, leaving the laptop
configured and ON.
4) Someone else, name not mentioned here, arrives and is going to give
her talk after mine. She is carrying _no_ laptop but a USB
memorystick.
5) Being told that I am the next speaker, and my computer is There, she
promptly removes the AC cord from my computer, puts it on the podium
and inserts the USB stick. Nothing happens<TM>
6) Wha... Ah, the AC cord. Put that in. Turn the computer on.
7) She is completely mezmerized by the arcane messages that starts to
fill the screen. linux looks completely alien.
8) When I return I ask her what she is doing to my computer and how she
thinks I am going to get it to work with the projector again in the
two minutes that remain until my talk begins.
9) She leaves the room, not returning that day. Misses her talk ("ground
fall"). Meanwhile, I have to give my talk in the upper-left quarter
of the screen. Keeping my good humour ("hanging on a ledge" ?).
