David,First let me say thank you for taking the time to reply and for your work on preview-latex. Much obliged.

This is in contrast to merely not previewing correctly, a known issue discuessed on the mailing list in Jan 2006. The usual remedy, adding "delayed" as an optional argument to \usepackage{xy}, does not solve this problem. The optional argument would need to get added to the call of preview, not the call of xy.
Yes, I was doing that wrong. I fixed this by adding "delayed" as the first string argument in the emacs customization group "Preview Required Option List". However, this still does not resolve the problem.
Emacs : GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (i386-apple-darwin8.6.1) of 2006-04-10 on plume.sr.unh.edu - Aquamacs Distribution 0.9.9c Package: 11.82 Run buffer contents: Running `Preview-LaTeX' on `_region_' with ``pdflatex

This looks like you are editing a file _region_.tex, or at least that is the impression AUCTeX has. Very unhealthy. _region_ should never be edited or compiled by the user manually.
I was editing sample3.tex and using the defaults of Aqumacs Emacs 0.9.9c (on osx 10.4.6 intel), which ships with auctex pre-installed. But I did the command preview-buffer instead of preview-document. preview-document runs on sample3.tex directly, instead of _region_. Also, I should note that I get the same failure trying to run preview on the this file from within xemacs (xemacs version 21.4.17, preview-latex 11.82; Debian stable), so I don't think the problem is a result of idiosyncracies of this particular emacs installation.
I will submit an updated bugtrace after this reply. Thanks again for your help.
Cheers, Alexis
