I beleive that the emacs-unicode-2 (aka emacs-23) branch's
byte-compiled output is in general incompatable with older
emacsen, including HEAD (aka emacs-22). It has to do with
the change to the unicode-based internal character set.
I also beleive it has exlicit backwards-compatability code
to load elc files byte-compiled by older versions of emacs.
(All from memory from the first time I tried it; as gnus's
headers above show, I am running it again. When I changed
over to 23 this time, I re-installed all of the packages I
had previously installed and re-byte-compiled everything I
had in my ~/elisp dir. Unlike my first foray into 23 I am
not seeing any crashes this time. I presume only using 23
compiled elcs made a difference in that.)
