Please don't send mails to my private address instead of the
respective AUCTeX lists (I am now using bug-auctex), or the relevant
developers will not get to see them.

I find that if you replace
\end {align*}
with
\end{align*}
then the problem will go away. This looks like a bug in either
texmathp or maybe LaTeX-current-environment.

It should be available after you load a TeX or LaTeX file. Do you
have a Command menu in such buffers? If not, AUCTeX may not be
active.
