Which version of Guile did they try, and what problems did they run into?
(I'm not a Guile user myself, but I keep meaning to give it a try....)
Please don't get me wrong: I like M4. I'm just worried that it might
not be the best tool for this job, as the job evolves.

These are all nice things to have, particularly the last one; but at
this point we are heading down the path of designing a language (since
M5 is not what we want, either), and that sounds like a major investment.
