Sorry, but it works for me.  My patch was based on the fact that
top_srcdir is defined just above.  I guess we face a shell
compatibility issue (and you know what I think about NetBSD :):
I really don't know who does the expansion of $(top_srcdir) in my
case.  Could it be GCC?

Anyway, thanks I apply your patch, and next time, don't forget the
ChangeLog.
