In this case (and most likely every case), the CrossWire PPA was just a
few hours behind; I saw my system auto-update to 4.6.1 first thing this
morning.

Agreed! In all Debian & Ubuntu systems (and all their children; Mepis,
Mint, etc) this is highly preferable.
