Hi Phil,

Thanks for sharing that. Personally I like the Ubuntu Remix distro. That gives me a familiar feel. However, on the subject of netbooks, my experience over the past couple days has taught me a valuable lesson (again). When it comes to netbooks, if the hardware you are trying to drive doesn't play well with the open source community, your hossed. (For my non-native American English speaking friends: that's bad. :-)

I bought a BenQ Joybook and discovered it had a GMA500 graphics display card. There was very little joy in this Joybook the further I got into it. That particular card is not well supported at this time. The results was very poor performance with Ubuntu and the fix was not easy to implement, at least for me. Turns out there are a number of pieces hardware on that particular netbook that would take days to sort out and some things would never work in the current state of Linux or even in the near future.

Being quite disappointed in the folly of my buying such a doorstop, I reduced myself to graveling and pleaded with the store to take it back. With a little less money in my pocket, I left the store with an Acer Aspire 1410. Let me just say, this netbook just works under Ubuntu and I'm sure most any other distro would work good on it too. I highly recommend it. Plus, with it's 11.6 screen, you can hardly class it as a netbook. The list of tweaks it needs to get everything working under Linux is relatively short, easy and insignificant compared to the BenQ Joybook.

Lesson learned, do your homework before you go out and buy a netbook if you want to run it on Linux. They are not all equal and by all means, stay away from the GMA 500 Graphics display card!
