to reproduce:

Go to Checks->Characters->Unwanted Patterns.  
Click Patterns
Add " ."  (space full stop)
click ok, ok
BE will correctly find all " ."
But if you then go into Checks->Characters->Unwanted Patterns and click
Patterns again then all leading and trailing spaces are removed from every
pattern.
If you click ok, ok, then it will find every full stop. 

it is useful to look for spaces before punctuation and double spaces. Also we
don't want spaces after leading quotation marks.
