Details:

The Problem:
There are at least 500 Bible translation needs in Indonesia. It would be good
if an on-line Bible translation environment could be created, where a
mother-tongue translator could simply log in at an Internet café and find all
of his translation drafts and on-line Bible helps. A wonderful set of
translation helps are already found at Alkitab.Sabda.org. This would mean that
software installation and operating system problems would be done away with,
and translation drafts would be backed up and secure.

Sabda felt that creating a web based translation environment would be very
difficult, and that it would be best to just stick with GoogleDocs. I would be
interested in your take on this.

Teus' first response:
Reading what you mention about Bible translation through the web for those
countries, there is definitely a great need there, and there is a lot to be
done.

I would agree with Sabda that creating a web based translation
environment would be a huge amount of work, and that sticking with GoogleDocs
might be the way forward right now. What could be done though, for a start, it
to create an environment on the web that pulls together existing resources on
the web, such as GoogleDocs as the editor, the sites that you mention as
resources, and so on. That way the translators get sort of their own online
desktop when they log in from any place on earth.

Phil's comment:
Does anyone know of other on-line office and collaboration sites that might
be better suited to Bible translation than GoogleDocs? For instance, it would
be nice if the on-line environment would be smart enough to offer suitable
commentaries and other helps depending on which book a person is translating.
