Follow-up Comment #3, task #9417 (project bibledit):

Where it gives the possibility of Automatic, None, and Character, that is the
following the USFM standard.

But Bibledit has made its own extension in the stylesheet. This extension can
be seen when editing the f style in the stylesheet. Press Ctrl-S, navigate to
the f style, switch edit mode on, then edit it. There is an option numbering
1,2,3,... and of a,b,c,.., and of "User defined". When choosing User defined,
one can enter a sequence of characters. Bibledit will run through this
sequence when creating footnote callers. When through with the sequence, it
restarts, and so on.

But this needs to be documented.
