Follow-up Comment #1, bug #26108 (project bibledit):

There really is a packaged called libxml2-dev in Ubuntu 8.10.

See http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/libxml2-dev for all the details.

It is installed on my Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid machine.

Running

  rmadison libxml2-dev 

shows that libxml2-dev exists in dapper, gutsy, hardy,intrepid and jaunty.

If Synaptic will not show it to you, you might try

  sudo apt-get install libxml2-dev

instead?

Incidentally, note that Ubuntu packages of BibleTime 2.0.alpha3 now exist
which will handle all of the dependency issues etc themselves, making
installation of BT on Ubuntu much easier.  For one way to do that right now,
see http://devel.bibletime.info/wiki/Testing_BibleTime_on_Ubuntu -- but note
that these instructions are intended for testers more than for end users, at
this stage.
