Follow-up Comment #1:

This behaviour is by design.

If any new window is opened (even after closing it previously), then it looks
at the window sizes as defined in menu View / Screen layout. If you'd like to
have a full right-hand column when opening any window there, the solution will
be to change the Screen layout sizes in the said menu.

This bug report might recur many times. It probably shows that the default
screen sizes are not good. I'll change the defaults so that these make better
use of the available screen space.
