You do not "clone" it, you "checkout" (or just "co") it. In Dawid's
case, you checkout a branch:

svn co svn://svn.savannah.nongnu.org/avrdude/branches/serialupdi/avrdude

(Git renamed a lot of things ... compared to all predecessor VCSes).
