In spite of all that I rebuilt and installed libftdi 0.19 for Ubuntu 11.04 with the extra FT232H patches and avrdude compiles but seizes up when running: sudo ./avrdude -C ./avrdude.conf -c um232h -p m1280 -v -v -v -b 3000000 8<... blahblahblah.....
