Follow-up Comment #1, patch #6886 (project avrdude):
I created a branch with these patches applied here:
https://github.com/piglop/avrdude/tree/ftdi_libftd2xx
It's based on the instructions found on this page:
http://doswa.com/blog/2010/08/24/avrdude-5-10-with-ftdi-bitbang/
It contains closed source D2XX code from
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm so it shouldn't be merged in avrdude.
