Specifically, I'm using an AVRISP, not bit-bang. I can well understand why a bit-bang programmer has no chance of working on a USB<>Serial adapter.
Most people's time (even hobby time) is worth more than fighting with this kind of stuff. (consider not just the time hacking/researching but the delay waiting for answers) Go order a $29 AVRISP-serial or the $34 AVRISP-USB (saves you the $20 for the adapter) from Digikey and be done with it, IMO.
