Details:
I'm not super happy about the quality of this, it was a more of a quick hack
because the s/n ratio was annoying me.
I was going to replace all the if() { fprintf(stderr...)..
foo with a function, but I'd have to use varargs, and I don't know if you'd
have a problem on other platforms with varargs.
Gosh - this is 2005, tell me this isn't a problem and I'll resubmit a neater
patch.
