The version of the USB firmware at
http://savannah.nongnu.org/download/avrusb//AVRUSB.pkg/20030418/usb90s23x3.asm
bears the GPL and mentions no additional restrictions or requirements.
I agree that the license for other firmware versions or other parts of
the project may be murky, but the bits I have been working with are GPL
and clearly labeled as such. Not even the author can retroactively un-GPL
that version of the code, though he could release subsequent versions
under a different license if he chose.
As I said in a private message, I hate license issues.
