Follow-up Comment #2:

Thanks for your analysis and test script.  I added the
(modified) test script, but the patch became obsolete now
as I rewrote free() so it can now return memory back from
the heap.  That looked to be the cleanest solution to me.

Please verify my modifications to your test script match
your intentions.  (I had to modify it since the internals
changed.)
