Please do. Smaller, faster code for the cases that we care about,
a viable solution for the corner cases that I've never needed.
Sounds ideal.

<slightly off topic>
I lost track of some earlier changes to the stdio library
that freed it from pulling in malloc() and friends, can
anyone jog my memory on how that played out ?
