1) If you want to use gcc-4, then get gcc-4.0.1: 4.0.0 had some bug at 
least for avr. I found that
gcc-3.4.4 still delivers better optimization for size.

2) Follow what's written here : 
http://www.nongnu.org/avr-libc/user-manual/install_tools.html : it works
(I think that gcc needs to be produced in a directory different for the 
sources themselves: "mkdir avr-obj;
cd avr-obj; ../configure ....." etc)
