Thanks for the feedback.  I've merged the fix to the 1.2 branch, and
closed the bug report.

I think parts of this have already been done once by Ted Roth, and are
still there in CVS on a separate branch (that had been intented to
eventually become a per-device lib implementation).  I'll see whether
I can first merge the auto* changes to HEAD, and then base the
per-device lib idea outlined a couple of days ago on that work.
However, I'm pretty sure this won't happen before my vacation.
