I'm not very fond of it either, but it has been decided to accept the
Linux scheme back before we released 1.0, and there have been no
objections (other that it's not my personal favorite scheme, but I'm
biased from FreeBSD, obviously), so be it that way now.  All the even
middle numbers are reserved for stable releases, while the odd numbers
are meant for development versions (which we never actually release,
they need to be built straight from CVS).
