I agree with that reasoning.
I'd rather point out the idea again that was floating around a few
days ago: create a file, say <compat/genericio.h> (or
<avr/genericio.h> if we believe that compat/ should only contain
deprecated headers), and put all those defines there. Document this
file. Then, someone who wants definitions for a `generic UART that
would work on as many as possible AVRs', use the definitions from
there.
